Hopefully the arts and music won't be cut.  When we moved to this school I was told that we would always have music and art because of some  program that we have that other districts don't have.  The arts do have an impact on how the mind works.  All of the private schools have a music program.  There is a reason for it.

Why don't we have award assemblies for the students?   The town I came from the schools had a program called Character Counts.  Each month the school focused on one of these characteristics:  trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, citizenship, and caring.  Then at the awards assembly one or two students from each class were given an award because they practiced this particular characteristic.     Also why don't we have honor roll for those students who have a 3.5 gpa or higher?

I agree. Music and art are essential to keep children interested in life and learning.  We cant expect them to derive everything they need from academics alone.  We ALL need to express are creativity somehow and we should absolutely encourage that in the school atmosphere.  I just don't understand why arts classes keep getting cut because of budget cuts.  These classes are just as important, if not more so, than the core academic classes.  NO MORE BUDGET CUTS, NO MORE ART CUTS!!

I would keep hammering at the PTA meetings.  At the elementary school level introduce and set aside time during class.  Talking to the district can be positive at times, but the closed minded "art doesn't matter" types are still around. Stats will show, schools with art and music excel academically.  Kids need that part of their brains to work OFTEN! It helps the stress and helps their grades.

I went on a trip with some students and throughout the visit the staff kept offering them food and drink. At the end of long/quite boring visit one of the speakers asked the group what they thought the best part of the trip was ...to which one of my cheeky students replied....'the sandwiches' . I was hoping for a huge hole to open up and swallow me!

Year 10 GCSE PE paper:
Q: Rugby is a dangerous sport, but not as dangerous as some activities. Write down another activity that is more dangerous than rugby and why.
Answer should be along the lines of mountaineering/rock climbing/abseiling etc due to conditions out of your control.
Answer given by this lad in my class:
"Wrestling a bull or any other wild animal as it is likely to win and kill you."
I would have given him the marks just for making me laugh.

Define Old school and new school for me. Are we talking books vs technology, the library vs the web?

Unfortunately, schools are caught in a budgetary abyss, which makes it even more difficult for them to adopt new methods of teaching, especially those based on technology. Many schools are finding that they can no longer afford to support their own libraries. Materials are outdated, and staffing is expensive. Technology, on the other hand, offers it's own set of obstructions, computers and computer labs are expensive to build and maintain, technically savvy staffing is expensive and scarce and then you have training, software, upgrades etc., not to mention the time involved to research and catalog the best places to find information on the web.

My experience tells me that most educators teach "old school" methods out of necessity. If schools had the financial infrastructure to provide adequate technology, training and ongoing support, my guess is that many more educators would embrace it, but as long as it is an insurmountable hurdle, most will stick to the books.

Let's face it, technology offers some wonderful advantages that can't be found anywhere else, but never underestimate the power of the pen. Nothing beats a good notepad and a number 2 pencil.
