Place-Based Education
Salmon Creek School
David Sobel, professor at
Antioch University, has written a book called Place-Based Education:
Connecting Communities and the Classroom, available in our school library.
In his book, he writes:
“Place-based education is a process of using the local community and environment as a starting point to teach concepts in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science and other subjects across the curriculum. Emphasizing hands-on, real-world learning experiences, this approach to education increases academic achievement, helps students develop stronger ties to their community, enhances students appreciation for the natural world and creates a heightened commitment to serving as active, contributing citizens.”
The environmental education curriculum committee has been hard at work developing just such a place-based curriculum at Salmon Creek School. The focus so far has been to integrate the following land stewardship projects into the science classroom.

The Community Program Development task group is developing orientation signage and maps for visitors to our campus. The signage will include a mandala comprised of 4 representative plants and animals of the four ecosystems on campus. These icons will then be used in mapping. We are looking for pictures of the following animal/plant combinations.

For the Garden: monarch butterfly and
