Rio Vista High School 2008-2009 Syllabus Instructor: Mrs. Mena-Sandoval E-mail Address/Phone No.: (707) 374-6336 EXT: 1225 Course Name : Spanish Room: E-105 CLASS DESCRIPTION: This class will focus on the development of listening, reading, and writing in a cultural context, with primary emphasis on communicative competency. Students will learn how to express in Spanish the most basic functions of everyday life. REQUIRED Textbook: Dime Uno, Dime Dos or !Dime! Pasaporte al Mundo 21. Binder (for handouts from teacher, assignments, tests, etc.) Recommended: English/Spanish, Spanish/English, Dictionary EXPECTED STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Listening Comprehension: 1. Appraise high-frequency, learned material within an 800-1600 word range. 2. Begin to distinguish high-frequency situations face-to-face. Reading Comprehension: 1. Appraise learned material such as standardized messages, phrases, or expressions. 2. Construct meaning of high-frequency material supported by the situational context. 3. Demonstrate comprehension in a selection of written texts on familiar topics, integrating an 800-1600 word vocabulary. Speaking: 1. Communicate minimally with learned material, such as oral responses to core vocabulary. 2. Formulate responses in high-frequency situations. Writing: 1. Create simple sentences about events, objects, and persons, based on familiar material. 2. Experiment with high-frequency expressions and learned materials. Culture: 1. Distinguish the basics of personal interaction with members of the Hispanic culture. 2. Compare and contrast characteristics of culture studied beyond stereotypes. 3. Examine personal interaction and common needs of the target cultures. 4. Identify basic geographical features and famous members of the cultures studied in Spanish-speaking nations, names of persons and events of historical or cultural importance. STUDENT REQUIREMENTS: 1. HOMEWORK: Students have to turn in their homework at the beginning of the period when it is being collected. Late homework WILL NOT be accepted, unless the student had an excused absence. If you have a question on the homework, I may answer them before school, during branch, during lunch, or after school. 2. You are responsible for the work and assignments done. Get the phone number of two classmates that you can contact in case you have a question when you miss a class. 3. EXAMS: There will be eight chapter exams, and 24quizes throughout the school year. There will be a Mid-Term Exam, and a Final. 4. It is preferable that you use a notebook to take notes in class, the folder to keep your assignments and other material, and consult the dictionary when you have doubts. 5. YOU HAVE TO STUDY AT HOME EVERYDAY TO BE SUCCESSFUL!!! You need it as a foundation for the next level. You need to study on the textbook, notes, homework and in-class work. 6. Academic dishonesty will not be allowed. It includes but it is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion and misuse of college computer and software. Disciplinary actions include from a reprimand to a failing grade. 7. Come to class prepared to participate actively (asking relevant questions). 8. The instructor reserves the right to make changes to the schedule if it is needed. CONDUCT Basic rules of appropriate conduct must be observed in class at all times. Anybody showing any type or rude behavior will be asked to leave. This includes treating others with disrespect, chatting with another person, wondering in and out of class, etc. Please make sure that your cell phone is turned off before class starts TESTING AND GRADING Exams 20% Quizzes 10% Mid-Term 10% Final Exam 10pts Homework 10pts In-Class Work 10% Notes 10% Oral Presentation 10% In class participation (attendance, effort) 10% The grading scale is as follows: A: 90-100 pts B: 80-89 pts C: 70-79 pts D: 60-69 pts F: below 60 pts Syllabus is subject to change ¡BIEN VENIDOS! Spanish Class Rules 1. Any type of DISRESPECT towards the teacher or classmate will NOT be TOLERATED 2. Be ON YOUR SEAT before the bell rings and stay sitting down throughout the whole period. If you need to get off your seat for any reason you need to ask for permission OR else you will be marked LATE. After three late arrivals your participation points will be lowered by one percent for every two additional late arrival. 3. Eating, drinking and chewing are FORBIDDEN 4. The use of a TECHNOLOGICAL DEVICE such as Cell Phone, I-Pod, MP-3, Camera, etc. is UNACCEPTABLE 5. Keep the CLASSROOM setting CLEAN and IN ORDER at all times 6. DO NOT LEAVE the classroom setting WITHOUT the teacher’s PERMISSION. 7. REMAIN ON YOUR SEAT AT ALL TIMES UNTIL I DISSMISS YOU!!! IF ANY OF THESE RULES ARE BROKEN, BE CONSCIOUS OF THE CONSEQUENCES.
