Rio Vista High School's History

Rio Vista High School is one of two high schools in the River Delta Unified School District.  It is a unique district, as it covers three counties and over 500 square miles along the Sacramento River. Rio Vista serves as the gateway to the Delta and tourism, small businesses, gas exploration and agriculture support the local economy. Rio Vista High School was established in 1915 and serves as the focal point of the community. Our current student population is 391 students, the majority of whom are Caucasian, with a growing number of Hispanics and African Americans. Experienced staff is dedicated to challenging all students to their highest potential. The community also has high expectations about the school; many community members are Rio Vista High School graduates themselves and have great pride in their alma mater.

Since Rio Vista is a small rural community removed from larger cities, our students rely on the high school for social events. This past year the parents of RVHS have volunteered to sponsor Friday Night Dances, Open Gym on Saturdays and Library supervision during school days in which the part time librarian is at Riverview Middle School. Our athletic events are well attended by students who gather together after school hours.

The previous school year Rio Vista undertook the first stages of modernization as the “A” Building was torn down and the teachers moved to a group of portable classrooms, affectionately known as “The Village.” The new “E” building has been completed and the English department and Foreign language department has moved into the building. Tthe “F” building will begin its modernization this summer and the Art and Special Education departments and school counselor will be moved into the portables until the “F” building is completed in the 2008-09 school year. In addition, plans call for a new science, agriculture and food science building to begin construction the following school year. This will continue on until the high school has been completely remodeled in 2010 with a final projected student population near 1500 students.

In past years the school has grown due to new home construction, however, as with many communities in California, Rio Vista is experiencing a slow down of new construction. This has resulted in a stable student population, in which many students spend all four years of their high school career at RVHS.  The development of a retirement community over the past few years has brought a wealth of volunteers to the district’s schools and revenue to the school district. The district enjoys a strong relationship with the retirement community.
