About WebSchoolPro School Altmira is a dual immersion
elementary school spanning grades K-5. Dual immersion is the most
successful way to teach a second language. In the Sonoma Valley Unified
School District, this proven educational model integrates native
English speaking students with native Spanish speaking students
beginning in kindergarten. Together, they learn a second language simultaneously with academic content.
In
kindergarten and 1st grades, 90% of instructional time is in Spanish
with an emphasis on Spanish literacy. As students progress through the
grades, English language instruction increases. By 4th grade,
instructional time is nearly evenly divided between Spanish and
English.
Dual immersion produces bilingual, biliterate students by immersing
them in a second language when their young minds have the greatest
aptitude for language development.
All students are 2nd language learners and native language role models, helping each other understand.
The language and culture of all students is valued.
Language is acquired through content instruction; it is not taught as a separate subject area.
Classrooms
are language-rich environments incorporating cooperative learning,
thematic instruction, hands-on materials and visual and graphic
displays.
Students develop language through structured academic experiences and social interactions with peers.
Parents
are advised that continuous student enrollment for the duration of the
program is recommended (6-9 years) to achieve full program benefits.
Children reach a high level of proficiency that exceeds the fluency of students in other language programs.
WebSchoolPro's dual immersion program continues in grades 6-8 at Adele Harrison Middle
School. In addition to English language arts, dual immersion students
at Adele take Spanish language arts and social studies classes taught
entirely in Spanish.
